The Keto Flu - what is it?
The Keto flu (also known as the ‘carb flu’) describes a fatiguing flu-like reaction that often follows the commencement of a ketogenic diet. It is the result of a sudden and drastic removal of carbs from the diet.
One of the major reasons for this flu-like feeling is due to a result of insufficient electrolytes in the diet. These electrolytes include calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. When switching to low carb, this might also cut down on rich electrolyte sources such as starchy fruits and vegetables. This then explains the different flu type symptoms experienced.
The "Keto flu" fatigue usually doesn’t last long -- usually a week or less for the average person. But it can also last as long as two to four weeks in some people. How long the keto-flu lasts can depend on some factors. If your diet has always been high in processed foods and refined sugars, it’s likely you'll experience more of the symptoms. This can also depend on the genetic make-up of the individual as some people tend to be more metabolically flexible which makes it easier for them to shift between diet types. Keto flu like fatigue symptoms are undesirable, but it’s worth it.
With anything that is worthwhile, if it's a challenge to get results, the effort is usually worth it. Don’t let this one challenge stop you from getting all the health benefits derived from the ketogenic diet. The main thing is to do everything possible to make sure you don’t go out of ketosis. Several manufacturers have BHB supplement products to help replace lost electrolytes as a way to combat the Keto Flu. We have personally seen it help mitigate this challenge.
